Persevering with to Work for Youth, Households, Neighborhood – Flagstaff Enterprise & On-line Information | Northern Arizona Native Newspaper – Flagstaff Enterprise Information

After almost 13 years on the Flagstaff City Council, I chose not to seek reelection. My current term ends this month, and as such, this will be my last article as mayor for the Flagstaff Business News.

My family, the Dorseys, have lived in Northern Arizona for four generations. My grandfather moved his family to Flagstaff from McNary in the 1920s so he could make three cents more an hour at a sawmill here. My daughter and I still live in the family home he built in 1942.

I have had the honor of serving my community for decades: first, as an advocate for families in neglected neighborhoods; then, as a councilmember; and now, mayor.

I am proud of the work we have been able to accomplish, lowering crime rates, bringing a veterans’ home to Flagstaff, securing the needed funding for the Rio de Flag Flood Control Project, addressing climate change, increasing access to before- and after-school programs, and creating a variety of initiatives to support and promote small businesses, families and youth.

My twin brother and I are examples of what it means to be raised by a village, neighbors helping neighbors, the truest sense of community. I will forever be grateful for the love that this community has shown my family and honored to have been the one chosen to lead our beautiful Flagstaff for the past four years.

I will continue to work in Northern Arizona for a quality education for all students, regardless of zip code, as an advocate for local control for cities and towns and protections for our limited water supply, and for support for small businesses over big corporations. I will remain a voice for our youth, our families and our community.

I look forward to what’s next and all that we will accomplish together.

Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, Godspeed. FBN
